I’m Not A Runner

For my whole life, literally whole life, I have hated running.

“I am not a runner”

“I only run unless I’m being chased” was my joke (even then I probably wouldn’t run 🤣)

These were things I said over and over again

Enter Abby, my good friend who is literally a CHAMPION beach runner.

She suggested on a walk one day that we do a 5km run together at the Wanderlust Festival.

"No way," I thought.

She gave me her thoughts:

"Of course you can do it, just start training, I promise you can do it."

Me: "Hmm, maybe"

3, 4 times a week, I’d put my headphones on with the guided Nike training app.

“I cannot run without someone telling me to” (new thought, more helpful than the last, literally need a guided run to do it)

"I’m doing it"

"I don’t have to stop"

"Maybe I can do this"

November that year – I ran 5km with a champion runner, without any embarrassment.

She passed me, I passed some people.

She was there to cheer me on at the end.

I changed my identity.

I don’t love running but I did it.
