Sunday Blues and Dread

Early in my career I had a job I loved and a boss I loathed.

Every Sunday I would wake up with a feeling of dread in my stomach, anxious about Monday.

I used to stay at my boyfriend’s house every Sunday night just so I could feel like I wasn’t in my normal routine or ever be left home alone with my thoughts about work.

Sometimes we would end up at a bar, and I would feel such relief, convincing myself the 3rd glass of Pinot Noir was no big deal and that I deserved the freedom of the weekend before I was back in the chains of my boss at work.

I thought I was the strangest person in the world. My boyfriend didn’t feel this way, most of my friends seemed to like their jobs, and my family didn’t speak in this way. There was definitely something wrong with me.

The Sunday blues became a habit for 10 years across 5 different jobs.

I changed jobs because of the Sunday blues, I overdrank at a Sunday session when the opportunity arose, and I’d regularly come up with new Monday routine ideas (a diet, new planner, workout routine) in the hopes it would make the blues go away.

Then in 2015 I heard Brooke Castillo talk for the first time…

She explained that my circumstances (my job) don’t cause my feelings (dread, anxiety), but it was my thoughts about the job that were causing them.

I had to believe this was true as I went to 5 different jobs, all with the same issue. It wasn’t the job, it was me 🙈

Fast forward, and I haven’t had the Sunday blues in 8 years.

In fact, I now annoy most of my friends who do get them by explaining how they can solve them.

If you’re curious about the concept of your circumstances not creating your feelings, it’s the cornerstone of The Balanced Mum Method! It may be the Sunday blues, or dread when your toddler wakes in the night, or another scenario.

Whatever it is, book a free discovery call with me, and we can apply it to any area of your life you’re struggling with.
