What My Inner Critic Looks Like
I was on a walk last year chatting with my coach, and I think when I'm on a walk, I can tap into really visual things. In fact, this was like a mini visualisation.
I'm not super visual, so I love it when this happens to me.
We talked about that nice, gentle, wise part of yourself that wants you to do well, achieve your goals, take care of yourself, etc.
And then there's the inner critic – mean, awful, drill sergeant-like.
At that point, I flashed back to the 1980s and 1990s TV show A Country Practice in Australia. We used to watch it as a family two nights a week; it was an utter classic!
A lot of it was set in a hospital, and this heartless woman, Matron Sloane, ran the hospital. And there was Dr Terrence Elliot, the most beautiful, kind, lovely man who cared for all the patients.
Now my inner critic and lovely side have their own visual personas (now you can see them and picture them too, haha)
One of my goals is to do a backbend.
And Matron Sloane tells me, "You're too old, you're not flexible enough, why can't you get your head off the frigging floor?"
And Terrence tells me, "You can do this. You're not too old; you're not dead yet. Let's practice and get it done!"
Everyone has both of these sides to them, no matter who the personas are. In order to achieve our goals, we've got to calm down, Matron Sloane. Inside The Mid-Year Reset, I teach everyone how to let Terrance be the one helping them achieve their goals.
If these two voices resonate with you, and you want to live from the gentle one more than the critical one, come grab the class!
